Steps to make Chakkara / Sakkarai Pongal:

  2. Dry roast dal and rice on low heat till changes colour and Crisp
  3. Remove from heat and wash with water
  4. Saute dry fruits in ghee and keep aside
  5. Now pressure cook rotated dal and rice in sufficient water for 2 to 3 whistles
  6. Now add jeggary and cardamom powder
  7. Add some water to adjust consistency and cook well till everything gets properly mixed and homogeneous
  8. Garnish with fried dry fruits and serve hot or cold.. it tastes equally yum

Another similar variation is this Chakkara Pongal made with sugar. Sakkarai pongal recipe or sweet pongal recipe: we don't celebrate pongal festival back in Kerala. This should explain why I am posting this traditional pongal festival recipe in March. Sakkarai Pongal Recipe with milk is my fav. Rice with moong dhal cooked in jaggery and milk simmered and then garnished with ghee roasted cashews and raisins….who will say no to it.
