The kanji for pig (豚) can be pronounced either as "buta" or as "ton" in Japanese. Tonjiru (or Butajiru) is a kind of Miso Soup with pork and a lot of root vegetables such as Gobo (burdock root) and carrot. Even though it is a Miso soup, Tonjiru tastes very different from ordinary.   4. Sprinkle finely chopped spring onions, and serve. *Shichimi (Japanese Chilli Powder) is also recommended to add extra flavour.
