  12. Get 1/2 teaspoon tamarind paste
  13. Prepare 1/4 cup jaggery

Khichdi is the soul food of India. AluWadi or Patra or Patrado is a roll made of Arum/Colocasia/Taro root leaves. Since Arum leaves are not available here, I had experimented making rolls with mustard leaves, lettuce leaves and collard greens. I found Collard Greens taste the best.

Instructions to make Gujrati patra or maharashtrian alu wadi:
  1. Wash, clean and dry colocassia leaves
  2. Remove big stems and unwanted branches from the leaves
  3. In a vessel, mix gram flour, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, tamarind paste, jaggery, ginger paste, green chillies, salt and water to form a thick batter
  4. Apply the batter on the down (less greener) side of the leaves and roll the up while applying the batter on the rolled leaves too
  5. Grease the steamer plate and steam the rolled leaves for 20 mins
  6. Let the leaves cool down and then cut them into round pieces
  7. In a frying pan, take some oil. Add asafoetida, mustard seeds, sesame seeds, whole green chillies and fry the cut pieces
  8. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and coconut shreddings
