The ingredients needed to make Sambar:
  1. Make ready 1/2 cup tur dal
  2. Make ready 1 tbsp red lentil
  3. Get 1/2 cup each of brinjal cubes,drumsticks,and carrot cubes

  5. Get 1/4 cup french bean pieces
  6. Take 1 tsp red chilli powder
  7. Get 3 tbsp tamarind pulp

Sambar is a traditional South Indian stew that goes well with idli, dosa, steamed rice or can be served as a soup. Any South Indian meal, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, would be considered incomplete without Sambhar or one of its variants. Sambar, a hot and spicy lentil soup with mixed vegetables, is a must have accompaniment for popular South Indian breakfast and lunch recipes like Idli, Dosa, Medu Vada, Steamed Rice etc. A few years back Sambar used to be defined as South Indian delicacy, confined only to the Southern states of India.

Instructions to make Sambar:
  1. Soak dals for 30 minutes.Heat a pressure cooker,add dals,turmeric powder and salt.Add 2 cups water. Boil on high flame.
  2. When dal boiled,add all vegetables.Cover the lid and pressure cook on high flame for 1 whistle.After 1 whistle lower the flame to medium and further pressure cook for 4-5 minutes.Turn off flame.
  3. Let pressure released itself,open the pressure cooker and slightly mash the dal mixture.
  4. Add red chilli powder,sambhar masala and tamarind pulp.Adjust sambhar consistency,if required add some water.Let it boil for 2-3 minutes on medium heat.Do Not cover the lid.Sambar is ready.
  5. Now heat a pan and add oil for tampering.Add dried chillies,curry leaves and mustard seeds.When crackle starts pour into the sambar.Sambar is ready to serve.

I have used homemade sambar powder to make sambar recipe. But store-bought powder will work Wash and chop all the veggies you want to add to the sambar. I have used carrots, baingan (small.
